John Hallett

Architect, artist, John Hallett was born on November 30, 1966 in Los Angeles, California. He attended primary and secondary schools in Los Angeles and Calgary, Canada. From the age of nine, he began his formal instruction in painting. When he was fourteen, he performed in his first Opera, La Boheme, at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary with the Calgary Opera. Upon completing high school, John entered the architecture program at the University of Idaho in Moscow.John won many scholarships in Music and Architecture during his studies. His academic awards include a degree Magna Cum Laude, the highest honor the university can give.

After completing his studies, he relocated to become a partner with his father, Lyle, in 1990 at the newly adapted firm of Hallett Architects. John was one of the youngest licensed Architects of his day.He began to accept small architectural commissions such as designing several smaller renovations for the commercial clients that the Firm maintained.

In 1992, Hallett Architects designed and built two of Calgary’s most exclusive homes on Crescent Road in Rosedale. This was the beginning of the residential projects that established his reputation.

You can still see John perform with the Calgary Opera at the Jubilee Auditorium. He has performed and studies Music at the Banff Centre of Fine Art, sung with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, the Calgary Boy’s Choir, and several more.

John is an avid painter, skier. and swimmer.

Lyle Hallett

Lyle Hallett

Architect, husband, father, grandfather, Lyle Hallett was born January 1, 1936 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He attended primary and secondary schools in Winnipeg. Upon completing high school, Lyle entered the architecture program at the University of Manitoba. He earned his degree in architecture in 1960 and then took a position with the Department of Public Works in Ottawa, Ontario.

In 1962, Lyle moved to New York City and was accepted to study at Columbia University under such guest professors as Marcelle Bruer, Maurice Roteval, and Edward Stone. He obtained a Master’s of Science specializing in Urban Planning in 1964. Lyle was offered a fellowship to work under Wm. Fitch, architectural historian and to pusue a PhD but declined the offer.

Instead, he accepted a position with Victor Gruen in Los Angeles, California, where he worked on large scale planned residential communities in the LA area such as West Lake Village, Valentia New Town, and Calabasis.

He left to work with William Pierra on such commissions as the Los Angeles Art Museum, Irvine ranch development, prior to accepting a position with Bechtel corporation as a Project Manager. Lyle moved to Calgary in 1973 to take a position as Director of Housing and Urban Renewal with the City of Calgary.

He established his own architectural practice in 1977 and his son, John joined the firm in 1990.
